What motivates you in life? The word, motivation, runs through my mind on a regular basis. When I get to know a person I try to figure out where their motivations come from in regards to their career, pastimes, interactions, etc. For me every aspect of life has a slightly different motivation. I am constantly striving to improve myself. This isn’t driven by dissatisfaction with myself or my life. Simply, I believe in achieving excellence through pushing your limits and developing your natural gifts.
I’ve learned that enjoying and focusing on the process is just as important as relishing the final outcome. Some people, on the other hand, forget there is even an end result and simply enjoy life. That is their motivation. Live to eat, drink, and be merry.
For others, money equals success, power, and pleasure in life. I find that difficult as a motivating factor because if I ever find myself saying, “Just do it for the money”, I lose the desire to continue. Is anybody who does things for the money ever truly happy or satisfied? I would honestly like to know.
It’s interesting to contemplate all the different reasons people are motivated in life. While striving to be great at everything I do is important, I’ve grown to realize helping others is even better. When I’m finally a nurse, I want to be the best nurse I can possibly be…for the patients I’m caring for. As a Christian, I want to be the best person I can possibly be…and demonstrate what faith can do. As a triathlete, I want to be the best athlete I can possibly be…and inspire others to do the same. In everything I do, I want to help others in some small way even if it’s just being kind to somebody. That’s my motivation.
