Since the half-Ironman I took a 2-3 week hiatus from serious training and healthy eating. Physically, I was ready to go the next day for a workout but mentally, I just couldn’t get fired up. Call me lazy.
Last Friday, I ran the first race of the Pier 60 5K Beach series. How awesome is this….four 5K’s for $35! Ouch, did that first one hurt! My legs weren’t used to being pushed fast after being so
lazy rested so I should be proud of a 23:12 beach 5K, which landed me 1st in my age group.
The race was relatively uneventful until the last tenth of a mile. I passed a woman with half a mile to go that I recognized from a few local triathlons. This was a little ego boost since she beat me the last two races. Little did I know, she stayed right behind me and shot ahead 2 minutes from the finish line. “Agghhhh!”, I moaned in my mind and then a burst of energy came when I thought, “Hell no, I’m not going to let this happen.” I surged in front and kept my lead into the finish line. 2 seconds difference…Take that!
Has that ever happened to you in a race?
